Behavior Analyst Certification Board Requirements

 BCaBA Supervision

As of January 1, 2009, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board requires all BCaBAs to receive at least one hour of supervision each month (12 hours per year) by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.  All BCaBAs must obtain this supervision in order to maintain their certification.

Seeking Certification

Applicants seeking certification cannot begin supervised fieldwork until they have begun BACB approved coursework.

Applicants must accumulate 1000 hours of supervised independent fieldwork, of which  5% (50 hours)  must be direct supervision once every two weeks.

Applicants should visit the BACB's website at www.bacb.com for complete information about supervision requirements.

Supervised Independent Fieldwork

Option 1: 18 Months (1500 hours)

This option allows you to complete the 50 hours of supervised independent fieldwork required by the BACB to sit for the BCaBA certification exam. This requires at least 15 hours per week of appropriate experience activities as outlined by the BACB over a period of 18 months.

Option 2: 12 Months (1500 hours)

This option allows you to complete the 75 hours of supervised independent fieldwork required by the BACB to sit for the BCaBA certification exam. This requires 20 hours per week of appropriate experience activities as outlined by the BACB over a period of 12 months.

Option 3: Partial Supervision

If you choose this option you are required to find another BCBA to supervise any remaining hours required by the BACB to sit for the BCaBA ceritication exam.

BCaBA Monthly Supervision

Supervision will occur through face-to-face meetings or video chat with at least two in-person observations.  Supervisory interactions will include review of programs, program data,  data collection procedures, assessments, and program outcomes.  It will also include discussions regarding programs, modification of intervention procedures, ethical issues, and professional development needs and opportunities.  The BCaBA may be asked to submit videos for review.
